Day 1 : ARRIVAL - BANGKOK
- We visit the splendid Grand Palace, as well as Wat Pho. The afternoon is free to enjoy many of the other sights in Bangkok; Chaina town, the nation museum, Vimanmek Palace or Jim Thompson's House to name but a few.
Day 2 : KANCHANABURI AND RIVER KWAI
- This morning we head to Kanchanaburi, visiting the nearby war cemetery, the famous "Bridge over the River Kwai" and the infamous "Death Railway" We continue to the Hell Fire Pass where a museum commemorates the terrible losses incurred during the raiway's constraction. Later we transfer to long tail boats for a journey up the jungle clad River Kwai to our Raft Houses, set in a tranquil location by the river.
Day 3 : RIVER KWAI
- We spend a full day here exploring the jungle and the river. A walk to nearby "Mon" minority village is a pleasant way to spend some time, and there will also be the opportunity to ride elephants. You may wish to do some gentle bamboo rafting along the river or take a relaxed trip to the Sai Yok Yai Waterfall and some limestone caves.
Day 4 : AYUTTAYA
- Capital of Siam until the 18th Century, Ayuthaya is a UNESSCO World Heritage site and a stunning complex of palaces, Shrines, stupas and monasteries. We will spend the afternoon visiting the main sights including Wat Chaiwatanaram, Si Sanaphet and Mongkol Bophit.
Day 5 : SUKHOTHAI
- Siam's first capital, founded in the 13th Century, and which has now been fullyexcavated. It comprises 21 historical sites within the city walls and a further 70 outside. We will visit the main temples onfoot or on bicycle including the stunning Wat Maharat.
Day 6 : SUKHOTHAI - LOI KRATONG
- We spend the most the day at the Loi Kratong Festival, where local honour the water spirit ,Mae Kong Ka, by floating their 'Krathong', (banana leaf floats) in the water. There are procession of the 'Kratong', dancing troupes, and later in the evening a spectacular sound and light show. The festival closes with a boat procession on the lakes followed by a firework show at midnight.
Day 7 : KAMPHAENG PET AND LOPBURI
- Kamphaeng Pet Historical Park was founded around the 14th Century as a garrison town between Sukhothai and the increasingly powerful Ayutthaya. It receives fewer visitors than its two sister sights and is a pleasant place to spend some time visiting the beautiful weathered statues of Wat Phra Kaeo. Later we continue to Lopburi.
Day 8 : KHAO YAI
- We drive to one of Thailand's most diverse national parks and enjoy a pleasant afternoon walk through the jungle.
Day 9 : KORAT
- The 12th Century Khmer temple at Phimai is beautifully restored, and has some of the best-preserved lintels in the country. We spend time here and at the museum.
Day 10 : SURIN
- Our second Khmer Temple at Phnom Rung is beautifully situated on top of an extinct volcno Climbing up the many steps to the temple, we are rewarded with amazing views into the foothills of Combodia and onto the plains below.
Day 11 : SURIN-ELEPHANT ROUND UP
- A full day is spent at the event. We will see scenes depicting the co-existence between the wild elephants and the local population, on elephant catching and training, on tradition, on games, and a dramatic conclusion with a grand scene of warfare on elephant back.
Day 12 : BANGKOK-DEPARTURE
- Return to Bangkok.
